SCOBY Face Mask is a material research project focusing on biodegradable textile solutions.
The project was selected for the Talent Pressure Cooker 2020 at BioArt Laboratories and exhibited at Dutch Design Week 2020.

Due to the current pandemic, face masks have become an additional contributor to textile waste pollution.
The SCOBY Face Mask is a biodegradable face mask made out of organic waste produced by kombucha brewing.

SCOBY, which stands for Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast, can be developed into a strong and flexible material, called “kombucha leather”.

I treated the SCOBY with oils and beeswax to develop some prototypes of “kombucha leather”, and used them to design a compostable face mask.
